The LGBTQ+ dating scene has improved dramatically over the last few years. From starting out as not much more than a few one-size-fits-all hook up apps, or a token add-on to heterosexual dating apps such as Tinder or Hinge, in 2023, there are now some fantastic specifically-targeted and niche apps for those in search of a serious LGBTQ+ relationship.

Dating Beyond Grindr

Sites worth visiting for dating, travel and social networking are Scruff and Blued. However, most notable is the launch last year of Motto, a matchmaking app that enables gay, bi and queer men, trans and non-binary people to make meaningful romantic connections. It was created by Joel Simkhai, the original founder of Grindr. The app authenticates its members and sends users 5-10 profiles daily.

Another recent quality dating app to launch is LESGO, made for the LGBTQIA+ community, by the LGBTQIA+ community. Whether it’s queer friends you are seeking, to embark on a long-term relationship, or if you're simply looking for hook-ups, this is one of the most popular LGBTQ+ apps in the sector. Features include the use of real names and verified profiles, as founder, Nick Aldrich, set out to try and quash the damaging and toxic behaviour he had experienced himself in gay dating culture.

A Strong Demand For In-Person LGBTQ+ Dating Services

It appears more could be done to offer more face-to-face services for the gay community, particularly for the older demographic. Aaron, a business executive from Essex, was keen to embark on a long-term relationship, yet felt demoralised by the dismissive behaviour he experienced on gay dating apps. He welcomes the services that encourage real-life meet ups and would like to see additional gay dating events and soiree’s for more serious like-minded singles.

“It’s cutthroat. The apps encourage people to always look for something better, so there's no follow through or full commitment to see if there is something worth exploring,” adds Adam, a busy professional from London. Adam feels that apps take the romance out of meeting people and make it all feel too clinical. He is encouraged that the industry is beginning to sit up and listen.

Something For The Ladies

Popular lesbian dating apps include HER, a nurturing community where you can meet like-minded people, share your story, and maybe even meet your forever person. There is also Senior Lesbians, specifically for women aged 50+. For lesbian dating events, visit Design My Night, which covers most major cities.

Bisexual Dating

One of the largest dating services in the UK for bisexual and bi-curious people is BiCupid. The site bills itself as the go-to destination for sexy and open-minded singles and couples who are looking to explore their sexuality, chat, hook up, and date in a friendly and comfortable environment.

Everyone is Welcome

There really is something for everyone, including the transgender community, served by Transdr, for dating, relationships, community and support.

Also, worth a mention for the queer community is the Lex app. Lex stipulates that their app is a ‘lo-fi, text-centered social app for the queer community’. Their mission was to create a digital playground so that transgender, genderqueer, non-binary and queer folks can form meaningful connections. Lex encourages connections that go beyond swiping on selfies.

Thurst is a service that is making real headway in eradicating racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, shaming, or harassment. The app was developed by queer black folk and queer people of colour, so unlike some of the other dating platforms, they don't tolerate toxic behaviour.

And, for the 1% of the UK population who identify as asexual, there is ‘ACE’.

In-Person Gay Matchmaking Services

Currently, the only quality offline matchmaking service for gay men is The Echelon Scene. Typically, clients are professional or high net worth men seeking their forever person. The Echelon Scene is headquartered in London, however, the founder Jacqueline has extended her clientele base into New York and Toronto.

As technology, sexualities and understanding and acceptance continue to break new barriers and tread new paths, the opportunities for older LGBTQ+ adults to make romantic connections continue to grow.
